Plans for the new central Torquay Premier Inn have been given the go-ahead. The hotel will consist of 120 bedrooms alongside an in-house restaurant. Designed to boost and support to the towns wider economic and tourism objectives.

Ward Williams Associates (WWA) was appointed to provide Project Management, Quantity Surveying and Principal Designer services on the scheme with designers Axiom Architects, Simpsons Engineers, Jenks Associates and Roach planning. WWA and their team of designers have been working collaboratively with Torbay Development Agency (TDA), Torbay Council and Whitbread, Premier Inn’s parent company, to secure the planning permission last week (12 August).

The location of the new site is off Montpellier Road on part of a currently under-utilised Terrace Car Park. Featuring spectacular views across Tor Bay, the hotel is just minutes from the Strand and Torquay Harbour. This fantastic location is expected to attract new visitors and encourage future investment in Torquay by improving the quality of the accommodation currently available.

Whitbread will take a long-lease on the finished hotel building, which has been meticulously designed to fit with its surroundings and meet the group’s latest requirements.

Paul Smith, acquisitions manager for the South West at Premier Inn, said: “Securing unanimous planning consent for the 120-bedroom Premier Inn on Montpellier Road demonstrates the quality of the new hotel and the long-term benefits we will bring.

“More and more Premier Inn customers are staying with us for leisure breaks and staycations in Devon and Cornwall and our desire for a second Premier Inn hotel in Torquay reflects strong demand for Premier Inn bedrooms in the town year-round. We are confident the hotel will be very popular with our guests when the doors open.”

Matt Bromley, WWA Partner and Project Lead, said: “This new Premier Inn hotel is a fantastic addition to Torquay. This scheme will enhance Torbay as a visitor destination, providing good value, quality accommodation”.

“WWA has a long-standing relationship with Whitbread and is currently appointed to assist in their ongoing nationwide development programme, including new build and extension projects to increase capacity across their hotel portfolio”.

The hotel will be Premier Inn’s second hotel in Torquay, adding to the seafront hotel on Shedden Hill Road.
