New Sainsbury’s Store in Portishead Opened

WWA have been involved in the development of the new £15m Sainsbury’s Store in Portishead, which opened this week. The new store includes; supermarket, on-site bakery, café, delicatessen and petrol station.

Portishead is one of the fastest growing towns in the UK and was in desperate need for further retail choice and competition. This is evident by the stores first week’s sales exceeding expectations.

The project has been in the pipeline since 2009, and following a lengthy acquisition and planning process, the store was finally constructed by Kier Retail Ltd in just 21 weeks. There were also challenges to the build, when rare newts were found on site, which needed to be moved by specialist ‘newt trappers’.

Matt Bromley and Nick Anderson undertook a Development Project Management role throughout the entire feasibility and delivery phase.

Matt Bromley, Senior Associate Director in our Plymouth office, commented; “We are especially proud to have been involved the development of this particular store, as it has had every test thrown at it from day one including legal challenges, ecology constraints, boundary limitations to name but a few, but the entire team has worked incredibly hard over the past 5 years to deliver a sustainable and modern store for the residents or Portishead – a real success story in this challenging retail market”.
